Potential Risks
Stationary Vehicles | Fly-tipping | Workforce in the Road | Accidents | Thefts
In the UK, being struck by a moving vehicle is the third most common cause of fatal injuries in the workplace according to a recent report from Health & Safety Executive.
Risk Mitigation
The Risks
Stationary Vehicles: – Broken down or stranded vehicles can cause traffic issues or damage to barriers and vehicles.
Fly-tipping: – Illegal waste disposal along the side of the highway or in laybys.
Workforce in the road – having employees on the highway can be extremely perilous with high-speed traffic passing nearby.
Accidents – it is critical that motorway accidents are reported and responded to as soon as possible.
Thefts and vandalism– a roadside construction site can be a target for thieves and vandals with materials and equipment at risk.
The Solutions
To protect highways, it is essential to continually assess the risk and employ temporary security solutions:
Monitored Technology: VPS Incursion System, a road traffic worker alert system, alerts road workers to the danger of approaching vehicles through a wireless-linked HD camera system mounted on a self-powered Smart Tower. The CCTV system also includes long-distance thermal imaging, backed by a mobile, rapid response guarding service.
Variable Messaging Signs: Temporary signage and instruction to drivers and can be integrated with other intelligent traffic solutions.
Over-height Detection Sensors: And other activation response monitoring services are easily deployed for temporary security on highways work.
VPS are temporary security experts who offer risk assessment and solutions to suit the needs of highways project managers.
HW Martin, working alongside Highways England, are working on a major new infrastructure project on a stretch of motorway involving lane closures, significant roadworks, and free recovery for vehicles. The VPS solution encompasses 10x solar powers CCTV towers with PTZ cameras all linked to our own Remote Video Receiving Centre monitoring live traffic-flows and reporting stranded vehicles, while also protecting the worksite, materials and equipment from vandalism and theft.
