Potential Risks
Theft | Vandalism/Arson | Employees | Increasing Costs & Legislation
In 2023, the Head of UK Serious Organised Acquisitive Crime reported a 48% rise in cabling and solar panel theft from solar sites between 2021 and 2022.
Risk Mitigation
The Risks
Theft: Expensive machinery and materials are used in utilities and infrastructure sites that can be subject to criminals looking to make money from high resale valued assets.
Vandalism/Arson: Activists and political terrorists can target utilities and infrastructure to disrupt supply and cause logistical issues.
Employees: Working in potentially hazardous environments, a customer’s employees need to be well protected against security threats as well as injury or fatality from incidents on site.
Increasing Costs & Legislation: The ever-changing economy and increased environmental awareness is putting pressure on utilities and infrastructure providers to cut costs and keep a keen eye on budgets.
The Solutions
To protect utilities sites from being targeted by activists or criminals it is essential to continually assess the risk and employ temporary security solutions:
Monitored Technology: A variety of state-of-the-art monitoring technology including CCTV Towers, Safer Pod S1 and more can be used on sites to give 24-hour, control centre supported site surveillance. Fire and water alarms can also be used to trigger an urgent response to any incidents or threats.
Human Intervention: Manned guarding can be employed to ensure a physical presence at a site to act as both a deterrent and proactive security checks.
Physical Protection: Perimeter protection such as fencing, barriers and access controls can be implemented to deter and deny entry to a plant or facility.
Utilities and infrastructure providers can adapt and maximise their security on a temporary basis to combat any planned or unexpected disruptions to their services. VPS can quickly deploy a variety of affordable solutions and work with customers to advise on flexible solutions at every stage of the project journey.
Protecting new wind-farm infrastructure is a crucial concern to ensure functionality and sustainability of energy projects. VPS equipped Eurowatt’s wind farm site with 10 next-generation alarms at the base of each wind turbine, in a remote site on difficult terrain meaning traditional security options were not possible.
